More Feel

More Feel

██ DAY 8 █████████████████████████

I tend to work very strange hours so my posts sometimes are off by a day because of just staying up late, so some posts might happen on back to back, but on the same days.

Been adding a TON of feel to my game, because it’s more of a static game there was very little movement which I think made it somewhat dull to look at. I think what I had was absolutely fine for a game jam, but not so much for a steam game. My game also being 1-bit style black and white really needs to stand out and move a lot.

Chromatic Aberration

I really love the look of this when used in certain ways, I think it can be overused for sure in some games, but my idea for it was to show the puzzle dungeon as this glitchy thing being built ad hoc by the character flying around on the little platform “Mort” I added a shake to the boxes and also a glitchy effect, which I think works really well. There is one more effect I’m going to add, but it’s going to be when you put the boxes in the right placeholder.

Movement

Morty was always meant to move around the screen as you played, but I didn’t have time to program that in during the 48 hour game jam. With movement I gain so many different things I can do with him, he can be used for puzzles, boss rooms, to trick or deceive the player… even trolling as you fail at the puzzles. I imagine a puzzle where he gets frustrated with your progress, and starts to block off where you can go in real time and you have to battle him, or he starts moving around the landing blocks as you are playing, so many things I can do here.

Parallax on mouse movement

This one I talked about before, but still proud of it. Just more feel for the game, a very subtitle 3 layer parallax effect on the background, the very bottom layer also has a fade in an out to look like lights that are slowly dimming.

Overall I am happy with the progress I have made. My day job has been EXTREEMLY busy because of the new year and everyone wants to get a new book out so progress has be a tad slower then I like, but I think with the feel of the game and the artwork, it’s important it isn’t rushed. Once I have this stuff down it’s a major portion of the game completed.
